Bridges

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance used to replace one or more missing teeth by literally "bridging" the gap between your remaining natural teeth.

What it looks like A bridge consists of two or more crowns on either side of the gap (these anchor teeth are called abutments), with a false tooth (called a pontic) suspended in between. The whole thing is one connected unit cemented permanently in your mouth.

What it does Just like a partial, it restores your ability to chew, helps your speech, and fills in your smile. It also prevents neighboring teeth from shifting into the empty space.

How it's different from a partial This is the big one — a bridge is cemented in place permanently. You don't take it out at night or to clean it. You brush and floss it just like your natural teeth (though your dentist will show you a special flossing technique to clean underneath the bridge).

What to expect at your appointment It typically takes two visits:

  • First visit — the dentist shaves down and prepares the two anchor teeth on either side of the gap, takes impressions, and places a temporary bridge

  • Second visit — the permanent custom-made bridge is cemented into place
